The Prague Hibernians travelled to Bratislava last Saturday to take part in the final Gaelic Football tournament of the 2013 calendar. The club was determined to finish the year on a high and aiming to take the men’s and women’s titles back to Prague. In driving rain and gusting wind we duly delivered.
The women started the day facing the Slovak Shamrocks in the first match, they came through this test in flying colours and then went on to defeat the Vienna Gaels in the final group game. This guaranteed them a place in the final where they met the Slovaks again. However the final was a much tougher affair with the Hibs down five points at half time. The second half performance was absolutely fantastic with the girls showing tremendous character to dig deep and come out on top by a score line of 3-01 – 2-00. CIBCA’s own and captain of the ladies team Anne Clark putting the icing on the cake with a last minute goal. Congrats girls!
The men also started the tournament with Slovakia as opponents. After a sluggish start the Hibs clicked into gear in the second half and ran out comfortable winners in the end. In the second match Prague came up against their old foes, the Vienna Gaels who have had the Indian sign over the Hibernians for over two years now. But the determination and will to win shown by Prague was fantastic. Vienna just couldn’t live with the power and skill of the Prague team. For long periods of the second half Vienna failed to advance out of their own half, such was the Hibs domination. The final score in this one, 5-10-4-01. The final was the same line up as the ladies with Prague pitted against the Shamrocks. Again there was bitter defeat tasted by the home team as the Hibs started where they left off against Vienna taking score after score, winning 4-10-3-00.
A wonderfully successful day for the club and everyone involved. The Prague Hibernians would also like to take this opportunity to thank CIBCA for it continued support. Here’s wishing both organisations the very best of luck and success for 2014.
