For those who don't know your music, how would you describe yourselves?

We named our musical style Celt-Folk-Rock and I dare say that even after more than 20 years it still holds true. We are based on the traditional music of the British Isles - Ireland, Scotland and England. We don't just try to copy original patterns, but bring our own ideas and arrangements from other genres that we enjoy. Lyrics are very important to us - we sing in Czech and try to preserve the original stories and plot connections as faithfully as possible. We are helped by two great translators, Václav Pinkava and Saša Niklíčková. The result is a multi-genre mix in which a fan of traditional, folk and rock music will find something for themselves.

How did you become interested in the music of the British Isles?

In the late 80s and early 90s, there was a huge boom of "Celtic culture" in the Czech Republic. Bands like Asonance, Dún An Doras and Irish Dew formed and they were responsible for its popularization, each in a slightly different way. I guess it was thanks to them that we first encountered "Celtic music". Personally, in the mid-90s, I accidentally discovered the album Dúlamán by Clannad, probably their most traditional recording, and it completely enchanted me. I started learning songs and tunes for the recorder and soon bought my first pennywhistle. Then came other musical discoveries - Deanta, Solas, Lúnasa, John McSherry, Michael McGoldrick. When I later added the Galician flutist and bagpiper Carlos Núňez to my selection, whom I met in person, I was already sure that I wanted to make this music and bring my own ideas to it. That's when Isara was created.

How do you explain the huge interest in everything Celtic in the Czech Republic?

I dare say that two names are responsible for this "mainstream" interest - the music group Asonance, which brought Celtic music to Czech folk stages. Folk was and still is an extremely strong genre in this country, actually a whole subculture, and folk musicians took Asonance as their own. Their songs became popular and practically everyone could sing "Two Ravens" or "The Witch of Amesbury". The other name is "Beltain", a musical and cultural festival that travelled around Czech castles and chateaux for many years, bringing new musical discoveries, as well as cultural enlightenment - crafts, historical lectures, rituals. It had an incredible magic that was exactly right for the post-revolutionary era when people were looking for new cultural and spiritual impulses. "Celticism" was wild, original and, moreover, with local historical roots, so you could identify with it. Everyone wanted to have a drop of Celtic blood. This wave has already passed and I would say that we are in a "healthy normal", where every genre has its place and its fans. But I am convinced that the interest comes from the "nineties", which resonate as strongly in this country as the sixties in the USA and the West.

Who is the leader of the band, if any?

Probably there isn’t one. The original Isara was founded by me [Filip Šelemberk] and I invited my brother [David Šelemberk] to join right from the start, so we are the last remaining members of the original group. We have been leading it as authors for a long time, but even that changes as new musicians come in and what they bring to the mix. David is the one who is leading us organizationally. Overall, we are probably more of a democracy. We have never had a bandleader who would dictate, make decisions and fire members, and we still don't.

You are quite a large band, 3 members from one family, are there ever disagreements?

Of course. 😊 It's probably impossible to do something so intense and not have disagreements. Plus, we spend a lot of time together, we play up to 90 concerts a year, so it's natural that there will be disagreements. Communication is absolutely key, not keeping it to yourself and dealing with it. And the main principle is not to drag it onto the stage! Fortunately, music is extremely healing in this regard. On stage, you live in the present moment and there's no time to think about supposed grievances.

How often do you rehearse?

Most of the year, once a week. During the summer concert season, rather sporadically and only when necessary, for example, for a new song for the next concert. Once a year, we have a weekend retreat where we create together and look for new ideas.

Isara's Album "Na Vlně"

Your latest album "Na vlně" was released in 2022. Are you planning a new one?

We're in such an in-between period now. Some time after the release of the album "Na vlně" our bassist Tomáš Nezdara left us and it took us 2 years to find a full replacement. That took the wind out of our sails a bit, because we were focused on searching and learning instead of creating new music. Isara needs to create together and when one of the key elements is missing, it simply doesn't work. We are currently in the creation and search phase. It's not just about new songs that we could translate and arrange, but also about some genre and sound shift. We are flirting a bit with our own original work and we'll see where it goes. Anyway, we're not going to the studio yet. First we have to try out the new stuff on a live audience and then we'll see.

Pro ty, kteří vaši hudbu neznají, jak byste se popsali?

My jsme si ten náš hudební styl pojmenovali Celt-Folk-Rock a troufám si říct, že i po více než 20 letech to stále platí. Vycházíme z tradiční hudby Britských ostrovů, Irska, Skotska a Anglie. Nesnažíme se jen kopírovat originální vzory, ale přinášet vlastní nápady a aranže z jiných žánrů, které nás baví. Hodně důležité jsou pro nás texty - zpíváme Česky a snažíme se co nejvěrněji zachovat původni příběhy a dějové souvislosti. S tím nám pomáhají dva skvělí překladatelé, Václav Pinkava a Saša Niklíčková. Výsledkem je multižánrový mix, ve kterém si to svoje najde fanoušek tradu, folkař i rocker.

Jak jste se začali zajímat o hudbu Britských ostrovů?

Na konci 80. a začátku 90. let byl v České republice obrovský boom "keltské kultury". Vznikly kapely jako Asonance, Dún An Doras nebo Irish Dew a zasloužily se o její popularizaci, každá trochu jiným způsobem. Hádám, že díky nim jsme poprvé narazili na "kelťárny". Já osobně jsem v polovině 90. let náhodou objevil album Dúlamán od skupiny Clannad, asi jejich nejtradičnější nahrávku, a úplně mě uhranula. Začal jsem se učit písně a tuny na zobcovou flétnu a brzy si pořídil první pennywhistle. Potom přišly další hudební objevy - Deanta, Solas, Lúnasa, John McSherry, Michael McGoldrick. Když jsem později do svého výběru přidal i galicijskéhu flétnistu a dudáka Carlose Núňeze, se kterým jsem se i osobně setkal, už jsem si byl jistý, že chci tuhle hudbu dělat a vnášet do ní i svoje nápady. Tehdy vznikla Isara.

Jak si vysvětlujete obrovský zájem o vše keltské v České republice?

Troufám si říct, že za ten "mainstreamový" zájem mohou dvě jména - hudební skupina Asonance, která přinesla keltskou hudbu na česká folková pódia. Folk byl a stále ještě je v téhle zemi nesmírně silný žánr, vlastně celá subkultura, a folkaři si vzali Asonaci za svou. Jejich písně zlidověly a "Dva havrany" nebo "Čarodejnici z Amesbury" uměl zazpívat prakticky každý. Tím druhým jménem je "Beltain", hudební, ale i kulturní festival, který dlouhá léta putoval po českých hradech a zámcích a přinášel další hudební objevy, ale i kulturní osvětu - řemesla, historické přednášky, rituály. Mělo to neskutečné kouzlo, které se přesně trefilo do té porevoluční doby, kdy lidé hledali nové kulturní a duchovní impulzy. "Keltství" bylo divoké, původní a navíc i s místními historickými kořeny, takže se s ním dalo identifikovat. Každý chtěl mít kapku keltské krve. Tahle vlna už odešla a řekl bych, že jsme ve "zdravém normálu", kde má každý žánr své místo a své fanoušky. Jsem ale přesvědčen, že ten zájem pochází z "devadesátek", které v této zemi rezonují stejně silně, jako šedesátá léta v USA a na západě.

Kdo je vůdcem kapely, pokud vůbec nějaký?

Asi není. Původní Isaru jsem zakládal já (Filip Šelemberk) a hned zkraje do ní přizval bráchu (David Šelemberk), takže jsme poslední dva kousky původního inventáře. Dlouho jsme ji táhli autorsky, ale i to se mění s tím, jak přichází noví muzikanti a co svého přináší do toho žánrového mixu. Organizačně nás nejvíc táhne David. Celkově jsme asi spíš demokracie. Kapelníka, který by diktoval, rozhodoval a vyhazoval, jsme nikdy neměli a nemáme ani teď.

Jste docela velká skupina, 3 členové z jedné rodiny, dochází někdy k neshodám?

No tak určitě. 😊 Ono asi nejde dělat něco tak intenzivního a občas se názorově nestřetnout. Navíc spolu trávíme spoustu času, hráli jsme i 90 koncertů za rok, takže zákonitě dojde i na ponorku. Naprosto klíčová je komunikace, nenechávat si to v sobě a řešit to. A hlavní zásada je netahat si to na pódium! V tomhle je naštěstí hudba nesmírně hojivá. Na pódiu žijete přítomným okamžikem a na nějaké přemýšlení o domnělých křivdách není čas.

Jak často zkoušíte?

Většinu roku jednou týdně. Během letní koncertní sezóny spíše sporadicky a jen když je to nutné, třeba kvůli nové písni na další koncert. Jednou ročně si dáváme víkendové soustředění, kde společně tvoříme a hledáme nové nápady.

Album Isary - "Na Vlně"

Vaše nejnovější album „Na Vlně“ vyšlo v roce 2022. Plánujete nové?

My jsme teď v takovém mezidobí. Nějaký čas po vydání alba "Na vlně" nám odešel baskytarista Tomáš Nezdara a trvalo nám 2 roky najít plnohodnotnou náhradu. To nám trochu vzalo vítr z plachet, protože jsme se soustředili na hledání a zaučování místo na novou tvorbu. Isara potřebuje tvořit společně a když jeden z klíčových prvků schází, tak to prostě nejde. Momentálně jsme ve fázi tvoření a hledání. Nejde jen o nové písně, které bychom mohli přeložit a zaranžovat, ale vlastně i o nějaký žánrový a zvukový posun. Trochu koketujeme s vlastní autorskou tvorbou a uvidime, kam se to vyvine. Každopádně do studia se zatím nechystáme. Nejdřív si ty novinky musíme vyzkoušet na živém publiku a pak se uvidí.

Jak nejlépe mohou lidé vaši hudbu slyšet?

Ideálně na některém živém koncertu. Jsme poměrně aktivní a aktuální přehled mohou najít na www.isara.cz, kde si mohou objednat i naše zatím poslední CD. Další možností jsou streamovací platformy Spotify, Apple music a další, kde jsou naše poslední dvě alba.
